Beginner Drum Practice Routine: Build Skills in 20 Minutes a Day

Beginner student practicing basic drum routine on pad and drum kit during in-home lesson in South Bay area

If you’re new to the drums, practicing can feel overwhelming. What should you work on? How long should you play? How do you make real progress without spending hours at the kit?

At In-Home Drum Lessons by David Montoya, I teach students across Gardena, Torrance, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, and Palos Verdes how to make the most of their time β€” even if they only have 20 minutes a day.

This post kicks off a new Practice Routine Series designed to help beginners build technique, timing, and musical confidence in a focused, easy-to-follow way.

πŸ₯ Why Practice Routines Matter

A good practice routine helps you:

  • Stay consistent

  • Avoid bad habits

  • Improve faster

  • Track your progress

  • Make drumming more fun and less frustrating

βœ… 20-Minute Beginner Drum Practice Routine

This routine is broken into 4 simple parts. You can do it with just a practice pad and sticks, or on a full drum kit.

1. Warm-Up (5 minutes)

Start slow with single strokes and double strokes.

  • 1 min: R L R L (single strokes)

  • 1 min: R R L L (double strokes)

  • 1 min: R L R R L R L L (paradiddles)

  • 2 min: Slow roll to fast roll and back

Focus on even hands and relaxed grip.

2. Timing Practice (5 minutes)

Use a metronome (or app) and play quarter notes, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes at a comfortable tempo (60–80 bpm).

  • Play on the pad or hi-hat

  • Count out loud: "1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &"

  • Keep hands steady β€” aim for accuracy over speed

3. Groove Practice (5 minutes)

Practice a basic 4/4 rock beat with kick, snare, and hi-hat.

  • Use this beginner rock beat guide if you need help getting started.

  • Loop for 8 bars at a time

  • Focus on keeping the beat solid and steady

4. Fill Practice (5 minutes)

Take one simple rudiment (like a single stroke or paradiddle) and play it around the kit.

  • Example: R L R L β†’ snare, tom1, tom2, floor tom

  • Try 1-bar fills followed by 1-bar groove

  • Keep it clean and in time β€” don’t rush!

πŸ”„ Optional: Add a Journal

Track what you worked on each day and write one thing you improved. It’ll help keep you motivated and aware of your progress.

🎯 How I Use This in Lessons

In every in-home drum lesson, I build practice plans that match each student’s skill level and goals. This 20-minute routine is perfect for beginners who want structure without stress.

Once the basics are solid, we layer in more creative applications like rudiment-based grooves, dynamic control, and song play-alongs.
