The hi-hat is one of the most expressive voices on the drum kit. From tight grooves to loose textures, creative hi-hat work can take a basic beat and make it feel fresh, funky, or explosive.
In Part 20 of our Drum Practice Routine Series, we’ll explore beginner-friendly hi-hat variations that develop control, coordination, and creativity — all from the comfort of your home setup.
Whether you’re just starting out or ready to add style to your grooves, this lesson will help you unlock the full potential of your hi-hat.

🕒 30-Minute Hi-Hat Practice Routine
1. Opening and Closing Hi-Hat (5 min)
Play a basic 8th-note rock beat:
Add a quick hi-hat open on “&” of 4
Close it cleanly on beat 1
Keep snare on 2 and 4, kick on 1 and 3
🎯 Practice at 70–80 bpm
2. Accents and Ghosts on Hi-Hat (10 min)
Play:
16th-note hi-hats (RLRL)
Accents every 3rd note (creates polyrhythmic feel)
Add light ghost strokes between accents
🔗 Builds from Part 17: Ghost Notes & Dynamics
3. Foot Hi-Hat Variations (10 min)
Play steady 8th notes with hands
Add hi-hat foot splashes on 2 & 4
Then try off-beats or every “&”
🎯 Focus on timing between foot and hands
4. Improvised Groove (5 min)
Use any hi-hat variation:
Try open/close, accents, foot stomps
Keep a steady kick/snare groove
Focus on musicality, not speed
💡 Teaching Tip:
Great drummers don’t just hit harder — they play smarter. Hi-hat creativity is one of the fastest ways to sound more musical.
