30-Minute Linear Drumming Practice Routine for Beginners

Drum student practicing linear groove routine during private in-home lesson in the South Bay area

Linear drumming is one of the most exciting ways to build creativity, control, and flow on the drum kit. The concept is simple: no two limbs hit at the same time — every note is played one after the other.

This creates tight, clean grooves and interesting fills that feel funky, modern, and dynamic.

At In-Home Drum Lessons by David Montoya, I teach South Bay students how to master linear phrasing step by step — and apply it to real-world playing. If you’re looking to break out of repetitive patterns and add style to your sound, linear drumming is a must.

This is Part 6 in our Drum Practice Routine Series. Check out the earlier posts on song learning, dynamics, speed, and more.

✅ What Is Linear Drumming?

Linear drumming means each stroke is isolated — no layered sounds (like snare + hi-hat at the same time). This encourages limb independence and adds a flowing, syncopated feel.

Example:
R – L – Kick – R – Kick – L – R – Kick

You’ll hear linear grooves in funk, fusion, gospel, hip-hop, and modern rock.

✅ 30-Minute Beginner Linear Drumming Practice Routine

1. Linear Warm-Up Patterns (10 minutes)

Start with simple, repeating phrases:

  • R – L – Kick – R

  • Kick – R – L – Kick

  • R – L – R – Kick – L – Kick

Loop each one slowly. Use a metronome at 60–70 bpm.

🎯 Focus on even spacing, clean transitions, and relaxed movement.

2. Groove Applications (10 minutes)

Use linear ideas in place of standard rock grooves:

  • R – L – Kick – R – L – Kick – Snare

  • R – L – Kick – L – Kick – R – Snare

Add hi-hat barks, ghost notes, or rim clicks for style.

🎧 Play along with a funk or hip-hop track to feel the pocket.

3. Linear Fills (10 minutes)

Build fills using single strokes and kicks:

  • Snare – Tom1 – Kick – Tom2 – Kick – Floor Tom

  • R – Kick – L – Kick – R – Kick (move around kit)

End each fill by crashing into your groove.

Pro Tip: Use R L K triplet patterns to build speed and phrasing variety.
