Top 5 Drum Rudiments Every Drummer Should Know

Student practicing drum rudiments during private in-home lesson in the South Bay area.

If you’re just starting on drums or looking to clean up your technique, rudiments are the place to begin. Think of them as the alphabet of drumming — short, repeatable sticking patterns that give you the tools to play fills, grooves, solos, and everything in between.

At In-Home Drum Lessons by David Montoya, I help students in Gardena, Torrance, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, and Palos Verdes master these patterns not through drills — but by turning them into real music.

Below are the top 5 rudiments every drummer should know, no matter your age or skill level.

🥁 1. Single Stroke Roll (R L R L…)

The most basic (and most important) rudiment. It trains you to alternate cleanly between your hands, building balance and consistency. You’ll use this in nearly every style of music.

🥁 2. Double Stroke Roll (R R L L…)

Two hits per hand helps develop control, rebound, and speed. This is the secret to fluid fills and long rolls on snare or toms.

🥁 3. Paradiddle (R L R R | L R L L)

A favorite among drummers — this pattern is both technical and musical. Paradiddles teach your hands how to move around the kit and switch leads effortlessly.

🥁 4. Flam (grace note + primary stroke)

This small detail makes a big sound. A flam adds impact to a note by placing a soft grace note just before the main hit. You’ll find them all over snare solos, rock fills, and marching band phrases.

🥁 5. Drag (grace double + main stroke)

Also known as a ruff, this rudiment involves two light strokes followed by a strong one. It’s great for ghost note work, funk grooves, and dynamic fills.

Why These 5 Rudiments Matter

They build real control and speed
They appear in nearly all modern grooves and fills
They improve your hand coordination and technique
They make your playing sound more expressive and pro-level

How We Use Them in Lessons

In every in-home drum lesson, I help students understand not just how to play these rudiments, but why they matter. We apply them right away on the pad, snare, and full kit — turning patterns into musical tools you’ll actually use.

If you're located in the South Bay and want to build a strong foundation from home, I’d love to work with you.
